Fireplace too large If the fireplace opening (height x width) is more than 7 times the cross section of the flue, smoke spillage can occur. Whilst carefully designed fireplaces and chimney combinations can operate on ratios as great as 12:1 (and sometimes larger) this requires great attention to detail.
