Fumes from fires and other burning appliances are dangerous!
They are made up of a number of noxious gases including Carbon Monoxide (CO). Carbon Monoxide kills over 50 people in the UK every year.
Many people are unaware of the danger as, at low levels of concentration, CO induces symptoms similar to those for colds and flu shortness of breath, mild headaches and nausea. At higher levels of concentration, the symptoms become more severe with dizziness, mental confusion, severe headaches, nausea and fainting on mild exertion. At higher levels still, CO will lead to unconsciousness and death.
If you even suspect fumes may be leaking from your flue (you get headaches, chesty congestion, drowsiness nausea etc or you see fumes as a haze across any room in the house), contact the experts immediately.

Links for other testers; what about other CO emitting appliances? And dont forget, if smoke can escape from the flue, so will fire if the chimney catches alight.
Fumes leakage is usually the result of blocked or porous flues (where the lining of the chimney has become porous through the deterioration of the masonry and loss of pargetting).
The solution is usually a flue liner.
